Statewide Indivisible Michigan (SWIM) Statement: End the Siege on Gaza, Defend Democracy
SWIM is dedicated to safeguarding and advancing democracy for all individuals and stands in support of BIPOC and all communities experiencing injustice. While Israel’s right to respond to the attacks by Hamas against its citizens is acknowledged, this does not warrant ongoing terror and attacks on Palestinian civilians or the withholding of humanitarian aid from affected populations.
The current crisis where, according to the United Nations, over 100,000 women and children in Gaza are severely malnourished, nearly 500,000 are facing starvation and nearly one in three people are going multiple days without eating, is unacceptable. We call on leaders to support and promote the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in need with the return of the numerous distribution points previously used by the United Nations, the release and safe return of hostages, and the creation of a path toward and following a sustained ceasefire.
We along with many in our community are saddened and outraged by the ongoing suffering and devastation in Palestine. It is essential that our shared values of compassion, humanity and justice guide the response to this crisis.
We cannot support the actions of the current Israeli government and will advocate for an end to any United States support whatsoever until there is a demonstrable change in the direction of Israeli policy.
