Want to express how disappointed, outraged, and betrayed you feel about both of our US Senators voting for S5, the Dreamers Deportation Act (Laken Riley)? This bill does nothing for the legacy of Laken Riley, a young woman tragically murdered. It is a purely performative Republican action to jump start buy-in for Trump's mass deportations. There were, in the end vote, very few Democrats who voted in favor of this bill, but BOTH of our did!
Consider visiting a local office and expressing your anger at how vulnerable this makes every single immigrant in our country, and how entire communities will be depressed by the fear this bill puts on all immigrants. When immigrants are afraid of raids and backlash, they stay home from work - as evidenced by recent raids in the fields of California's central valley, where entire fields lay unworked because people were afraid they would be rounded up. Think of the cascading effects: local economies are depressed, food prices skyrocket, jobs go unfilled, and services unrendered.
Senator Slotkin is opening her office in Detroit if you are nearby. If you aren't close, satellite offices will be opening "soon" - keep an eye out and pay her staff a visit! She needs to be well aware that grassroots activists put her in that seat by a narrow margin and she needs to pay attention if she wants our support in the future.
